PREVALENCE OF MESIODENS IN CHILDREN VISITING DENTAL DEPARTMENT OF TUTH

Abstract

Objective: To observe the prevalence of mesiodens in children visiting dental department of TUTH

Material and Methods: Children from 5 to 14 years of age, visiting dental department of TUTH were examined from 01/05/2012 to 01/05/2015. Presence of mesiodens in these children was noted based on number, shape and the management provided.

Results: A total of 3918 children visited the department in the given period and 13 children presented with mesiodens. This resulted in a prevalence of 0.33%. Out of 13 children, 12 (92.3%) presented with single mesiodens and one case (7.7%) with twin mesiodens. Out of 14 mesiodens, 11 (78.57%) were conical and rest 3 (21.43%) was tuberculate in shape.

Conclusion: Our study showed a prevalence of 0.33% of mesiodens in children. Early diagnosis and treatment of mesiodens can help in achieving optimal clinical results.
